The solidarity between the people of Caerphilly and Ukraine has been renewed with the closing of an art exhibition at Caerphilly Library.

The Garden of Memory exhibition by Ukrainian artist and poet Olesia Miftahova ran from June 21 to July 17, drawing together communities, councillors, and residents in a shared reflection on war, resilience, and hope. A mother-of-three who fled Ukraine after the war began, Olesia now lives in Crosskeys, where she continues to create art shaped by her experiences of displacement and rebuilding.

The opening event last month was attended by Caerphilly town mayor Mike Prew, county borough mayor Dawn Ingram-Jones, and deputy council leader Jamie Pritchard, who joined members of the Ukrainian community for a moment of cultural connection and shared humanity.

“This exhibition holds deep personal meaning,” said Yuliia Bond, co-organiser and representative of the Ukrainians in Caerphilly group. “It reflects the strength and creativity of those who have been forced to flee war, yet continue to rebuild, to share, and to inspire.”

At the closing event on July 17, the spirit of solidarity was further deepened. Olesia presented two heartfelt gifts – an original painting to Caerphilly Library, and a unique artwork to the County Borough Council – as tokens of appreciation for the support, compassion, and welcome shown to Ukrainians who now call Caerphilly home.

“Today was more than just the closing of an art exhibition – it was a moment of connection, reflection, and heartfelt thanks,” Yuliia said. “The support we’ve received from Caerphilly Library and the Council has helped so many of us feel seen, safe, and valued.

“Since 2023, Caerphilly Library has become a hub of healing and belonging for Ukrainians, offering art clubs, conversation sessions, support groups, and cultural events. It stands as a symbol of how public spaces can serve as sanctuaries of solidarity.”

Cllr Jamie Pritchard, Deputy Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, added: “It’s been a privilege to meet with members of our Ukrainian community and witness the incredible talent and resilience they bring to Caerphilly. The artwork presented today is not just beautiful – it’s a powerful symbol of gratitude, friendship, and hope.

“At Caerphilly County Borough Council, we’re proud to stand in solidarity with those who have sought safety and belonging here. We will continue to do all we can to support inclusive, welcoming spaces – like Caerphilly Library – where communities can come together, share cultures, and build brighter futures.”
