A record-breaking number of runners took part in this year’s Castle 2 Castle fundraising run – with more than £100,000 raised.

A total of 1,500 runners took part in the annual charity run on Sunday September 14 in support of cancer charity Velindre.

The 10.5-mile run started at Caerphilly Castle and finished at Cardiff Castle – taking runners along the scenic Taff Trail in the process.

The run was first established in 2014 when Velindre ambassador Steve Sullivan and fellow members of Caerphilly Runners ran from Caerphilly Castle to Cardiff Castle in preparation of the Cardiff Half Marathon.

Speaking after the run, Ruth Hazell, of Caerphilly Runners, said: “What an event. It was awesome.

“It’s always a joy to see this event grow year after year, raising much needed funds for such an incredible charity – one that, sadly, will touch the lives of us or those close to us at some point.”

She continued: “The rain held off and the atmosphere was incredible. Every participant gave it their all, crossing the finish line with smiles. The heartfelt messages on the backs of shirts were truly moving – a powerful reminder of why we came together today.

“A huge thank you to the volunteers, who – true to form – stepped up without hesitation. Their dedication throughout the event, no matter the conditions, makes it all possible.”

Ruth added: “I consider it a true honour to have the privilege of being part of something so special. This event is proof of what we can achieve together.”

Among the runners were Welsh rugby legend Shane Williams and Love Island winner Liam Reardon, who ran for a second consecutive year.

Liam said: “A massive well done to everyone who took part and for all the money raised. You should be so proud of yourselves.

“It’s a pleasure to be closely associated with such a great charity. All the money raised goes towards this incredible cause, so let’s keep pushing and growing this charity together.”

The money raised during the event helps fund research and clinical trials, as well as treatments and care and support services for cancer patients and their families across south Wales.

Dr Ricky Frazer, an oncologist at Velindre, spoke about the importance of fundraising efforts like the Castle 2 Castle run. He said: “We all know that cancer is probably the hardest journey that anyone will go on in their lifetime.

“The money raised directly helps put the patient at the centre of the care and helps us support the research to ensure we can continue to deliver better care.”

Dr Frazer continued: “The charity is able to support patients in so many ways, from ensuring clinical nurse specialist support, psychology input, to simply having access to Wi-Fi during treatment.

“It’s all the little things together which help make that journey just a little easier. Simply, we couldn’t do what we do without you, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

The event was sponsored by Caerphilly-based Castle Dairies and Bedwas-based Peter’s Food.
