Caerphilly Miners Centre is hosting a Neurodivergence Information Day on Thursday September 18, offering a free community event celebrating and supporting neurodivergent individuals and their families.
The event runs from 10am to 4pm and will feature a range of local organisations providing support and resources. Visitors can step inside the immersive Autism Reality Experience Bus, enjoy a dedicated quiet space for relaxation, and take part in wellbeing crafts designed to promote calm and mindfulness.
Recently, the miners’ centre received money from Comic Relief to develop children’s activities at the centre.
Amie Lock, youth projects officer at Caerphilly Miners’ Centre, said: “One of the things that we’re pushing is to make the centre more inclusive and have a variety of different things here to support everybody in the community.”
The centre has been working with Julie Fox, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s autism lead, to run a variety of autism-related sessions and activities.
Amie continued: “The Comic Relief funding is allowing us to have the autism awareness bus here that we’re using to train our volunteers and partnership links in the community, and also as a way of helping other people learn about what support is in the centre, and how to support people with autism in the community.
“We’re also holding a wellbeing craft day on the day, and Threads of Understanding – who are a community group that have just recently started here once a month – are inviting parents that may need to come and have a support group and share their stories, and create some wonderful things at the same time.”
Refreshments will be available at the Beech Tree Coffee Shop at the miners’ centre during the event.
In addition, a free webinar on Autism and Teenagers, run by Neurodivergence Wales, will be available to access between 10am and 12pm on the day.
