Four new digital boards could be installed in prominent town-centre locations across Caerphilly County Borough.

The local authority has applied for planning permission for the proposed ‘totems’ – a type of electronic advertising and information display unit.

If approved, they would be installed in Lowry Plaza, Bargoed; near the Asda supermarket in Blackwood; at The Twyn, in Caerphilly town; and in Tredegar Street, Risca.

The displays would stand around nine feet tall and contain 75-inch digital screens, according to specifications submitted by the council.

The proposal for a unit in Bargoed has won the backing of ward councillor Dawn Ingram-Jones, who told planning officers the application represented “a fantastic opportunity for community engagement and the possibility of future revenue”.

The proposal for Risca, however, has drawn more cautious feedback from Cllr Bob Owen.

He has requested the proposed location be “fully discussed and agreed with Risca Town Council, as I believe there is some conflict with a town council notice board and it is also in close proximity to the town’s Christmas tree”.

The applications are currently out for consultation, and can be viewed on the Caerphilly County Borough Council website under references 25/0729/ADV for Bargoed, 25/0730/ADV for Blackwood, 25/0731/ADV for Caerphilly town, and 25/0732/ADV for Risca.
