A scouts group from the Aber Valley were treated to an out-of-this-world experience when they visited the National Space Centre over the weekend.

Cubs and Beavers from 1st Senghenydd Scout Group travelled to Leicester on Sunday March 29 for a ‘Discovery Day’ at the National Space Centre, along with more than 500 other scouts from across the UK.

The event offered a rare opportunity for the children to get hands-on experience with space science, astronomy, and aeronautics.

From interactive experiments to STEM-focused challenges, the scouts navigated a galaxy of activities and explored the iconic rocket tower, all while working towards their Space Badge.

Scout leader Morsan, who was in attendance, said: “We’ve brought out Cubs and Beavers along for this great event. It is such a brilliant and engaging experience and a fantastic memory for them of getting their Space Badge.

“So, a massive thank you to the Space Centre and Scouts for organising.”

Also accompanying the children was Chief Scout Dwayne Fields, who mentioned how influential the experience had been for everyone involved, and how privileged he feels to be running the Senghenydd group.

He said: “It was fantastic to join young people from 1st Senghenydd Scout Group at the National Space Station in Leicester.

“In Scouts, it’s days like these that inspire young people, set their sights higher while giving them skills for life.”

Charlie Isham, Deputy CEO of the Space Centre, said: “We hosted over 500 Scouts and it was a real blast. Working with Scouting UK and the UK Space Agency to make it happen has been a real adventure, and our team has loved building a programme jam-packed with hands-on space fun activities.”

By the end of the day, the Senghenydd Beaver and Cub Scouts had taken a giant leap in their scouting adventure. Through events like this, the Scout group continues to offer young people from Caerphilly valuable opportunities and experiences.
