A new all-weather sports pitch and specialist pupil support centre have been officially opened at Islwyn High School in Oakdale.

The scheme, approved by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet back in 2024, saw around £950,000 invested into the projects.

The new multi-use games area (MUGA) has been built to replace the one on the site of the former Oakdale Comprehensive School, which is being redeveloped for housing. It will be open to the public outside of school hours.

Meanwhile, the new pupil support area will provide specialist and tailored support for pupils, helping them develop the skills and confidence to manage their learning and wellbeing, according to the council.

The new facilities were officially opened by council leader Jamie Pritchard and deputy leader Carol Andrews.

Cllr Pritchard said: “This project is closely linked to our flagship mixed-tenure development at Oakdale Place and demonstrates how our investment in housing and community infrastructure goes hand in hand.

“As we deliver new homes, it is equally important that we invest in the facilities and services that help our communities to thrive. These new facilities will support pupils and bring wider benefits for the local community for years to come.”

Gavin Bryce, chair of governors at the school, described the official opening as an “achievement that has been many years in the making”.

He continued: “This centre reflects the collective commitment of many partners, including the local authority, governing body and school staff, as well as the invaluable support of the council’s estates team and contractors.

“It will play a vital role in supporting our learners, helping them to build the skills, confidence and resilience they need to succeed, and ultimately improving their life chances.”
