Winners crowned at primary school bowls competition

Four primary schools have been crowned county champions after more than 350 pupils took part in the annual Caerphilly schools bowls competition.

A total of 76 finalists progressed to the finals day, which was hosted at Islwyn Park and Oakdale Bowls Club.

Glyngaer Primary School took home the Year 3 and 4 girls’ trophy, while Bryn Primary School won the boys’ category for the same age group.

In the Year 5 and 6 categories, Blackwood Primary School won the girls’ tournament and Tyn-y-Wern Primary School took the boys’ title.

The teams qualified for the finals after competing in cluster rounds held in April at bowls clubs in Ystrad Mynach, Blackwood, Ynysddu, and at Morgan Jones Park in Caerphilly.

Cllr Chris Morgan, cabinet member for sport and leisure at Caerphilly County Borough Council, said: “Providing opportunities for children to experience a wide range of sports is a key part of helping them lead active, healthy lives.

“It’s fantastic to see so many pupils taking part in this year’s competition, and I hope many will continue enjoying bowls.”

The tournament was organised by Sport Caerphilly to introduce children to new sports and encourage lifelong physical activity.
