Residents in Caerphilly County Borough are being advised to keep windows and doors closed after smoke from a major wildfire in Blaenavon spread across south Wales.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has been tackling the blaze since 8.42pm on Sunday July 19.

A change in wind direction overnight pushed smoke south towards Caerphilly and Cardiff, prompting a surge in 999 calls from concerned residents.

The fire service said it is receiving a high volume of calls about the smoke, but reassured the public that crews are on the scene and dealing with the incident.

The fire currently covers around 80 hectares of bracken and gorse. Firefighters have faced difficult terrain, restricted access and challenging wind conditions.

Six fire engines and a water bowser remain at the scene this morning. They are being supported by specially trained tactical wildfire officers.

A spokesperson advised people to stay away from the Blaenavon area to allow the emergency response to continue.
