The Climate Change Commissioner and Sustainable Futures Commissioner for Wales has paid a visit to Caerphilly County Borough’s most energy efficient school.

Peter Davies visited Greenhill Primary School, in Gelligaer, on Wednesday after hearing that it had achieved the highest energy rating score for any school in England and Wales.

The brand new Greenhill Primary School building has achieved an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating score of A+, which no other school in the country has been able to achieve to date.

Mr Davies said: “It’s been a real pleasure to visit the county borough. We have a lot of rhetoric in Wales around sustainable development but what I’ve seen today is the practical implementation, and that’s what is so encouraging.

“Whenever I’ve been asked which local authorities are doing a good job on sustainability, Caerphilly is always one of the ones I mention.”

Cllr Colin Mann, deputy leader and cabinet member responsible for sustainability said: “We at Caerphilly County Borough Council really are leading the way, not only across Wales, but across the whole UK in ensuring sustainable, energy efficient buildings which will be fit for purpose for generation to come.

“I am delighted that Peter was so keen to come along and see for himself not only our commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency as a council, but the benefits that such an energy efficient school building can bring to the pupils of Greenhill Primary School.”

Mr Davies also visited the council’s headquarters of Ty Penallta.
