Ystrad Mynach College wins education award for technology use

Ystrad Mynach College has won an award for its use of technology in education.

The college won the Outstanding Use of Technology category at the 2011 ColegauCymru Awards.

Competing against colleges throughout Wales, The College Ystrad Mynach was recognised for its work in providing students with an online portfolio to develop, present and share their work.

The portfolio system, known as Meddwl, was piloted with learners studying for the Welsh Baccalaureate, Essential Skills Wales and Teacher Training.

Meddwl allows tutors and assessors the ability to access, track and provide feedback on students’ progress.

Karen Stratford-Davies, lecturer in Care, said “Using Meddwl is a more effective system because more detailed feedback can be given. It allows for a more academic, professional approach and is more personal to the learner. Some learners have difficulty interpreting the written word; verbal feedback is often easier to understand.”

David Finch, deputy Principal Academic, said: “This is an outstanding achievement for the College. It reflects innovative, technological practice from both staff and learners.

“The Meddwl portfolio they have created will continue with them throughout time as learners and into the world of employment.”
