Council tax scam warning

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 12:06, Wednesday December 2nd, 2009.

Residents are being warned not to give out their personal details over the phone because of a council tax scam.

The trickster calls residents at their homes claiming to be from the council.

The person then explains that residents’ homes have been re-banded for council tax payments and that a refund is owed to them due to the payment of too much council tax.

In order for the “refund” to happen the con artist asks for the resident’s bank details.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is urging residents to be vigilant against the scam.

Councilor Colin Mann, cabinet member for finance, resources and sustainability said: “We would urge everyone to remain vigilant and to never disclose bank details if they have any suspicions.

“We at Caerphilly County Borough Council would never contact residents requesting bank account details in this way, and if residents are in any doubt, I would urge them to contact our Trading Standards team on 01495 235 291 for information and advice.”
