Ex-councillor Leonard Lewis, from Nelson, is to be made an MBE in the New Year Honours List.

Mr Lewis, 83, will be given the honour for more than 30 years service through Caerphilly County Borough Council and Nelson Community Council.

A community leader, he is also chair of governors at Llancaiach Junior school and Lewis Girls school.

He said: “I’m very pleased to be being honoured for all the work I’ve done since 1972.

“I want to thank the people of Nelson who have supported me over the years.

“I would not be in this position today and wouldn’t have achieved what I have achieved without them. I am grateful for all their help.”

During his time as councillor in Nelson, he has played a major hand in bring a new community centre to the area as well as a new school, bypass and old age pensioners complex.
