BBC Proms in the Park to return to Caerphilly in 2012

The BBC has announced it will be holding its annual Proms in the Park event at Caerphilly Castle.

The outdoor concert forms part of the Last Night of the Proms celebrations and has been held in Swansea for the last eight years.

The event will be held on September 10 this year. More details will be announced in April.

Cllr Lindsay Whittle, leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, said: “We are honoured to get the opportunity to host this prestigious event, which has become a major fixture in the Welsh musical calendar.

“The Last Night of the Proms is such a special occasion and the musical entertainment that will be on offer on September 10 will be in perfect harmony with Caerphilly’s magnificent medieval castle providing a breathtaking backdrop for the performance.

“We know visitors to the area will also get the chance to see the wealth of attractions we have to offer within Caerphilly county borough.”

A BBC Wales spokesperson said: “The event is all about bringing an ambitious live concert to outdoor public spaces, bringing live music closer to people who might not otherwise experience it.

“Each year we look at potential locations for a number of key events and we receive keen interest from all across Wales.

“We have enjoyed many years of close partnership with Swansea council, but it’s time to move on to share some of the magic with new audiences.”

The council has credited Cllr Ron Davies for spearheading the move.

Cllr Davies, who is cabinet member for regeneration and countryside, said: “We’re delighted to have been asked by BBC Cymru Wales to host the concert. We will make sure everyone involved receives a warm welcome from Caerphilly.”

Labour MP Wayne David added: “I am absolutely delighted that Proms in the Park is coming to Caerphilly.

“The castle is one of the largest in Europe and it will provide a beautiful and spectacular
backdrop for the Proms.

“As the MP for Caerphilly I am really pleased, especially as I am an amateur oboist myself. Who knows I may get the chance to play my oboe at the Proms.”
