Snow update from Caerphilly Council

Caerphilly County Borough Council has said its grit salt levels are still at a very low level despite the local authority taking a delivery of 200 tonnes earlier this week.

A spokesman for Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “We are hopeful that this will see us through the next couple of days until further deliveries arrive.

“Highways staff continue to concentrate their efforts on the main highway network as well as other key areas such as access to doctors’ surgeries and town centres etc.

“There is no significant snowfall forecast for the rest of the week, so hopefully the conditions will improve and the snow will start to thaw over the next few days.”

The council has also said that waste collections had been hit because of treacherous side road conditions and that staff had been diverted to help colleagues with snow clearance and gritting.

The spokesman added: “Hopefully local residents can appreciate the difficulties we are facing and we would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding.

“We will work hard to clear the backlog, once conditions allow safe collections to resume, and we plan to work throughout the coming weekend if possible. Our intention is to have 33 collection vehicles and crews working Saturday and Sunday.

“Most schools are closed today, but many head teachers will review the situation over the next 24 hours and then decide whether their sites will open tomorrow and Friday.

“The health and safety of pupils is paramount, so schools will re-open as soon as conditions do not present a risk to the children and staff.

“Many council-run day centres are closed today and staff are helping out in other Social Services teams. Meals on Wheels staff continue to deliver their much-needed service to elderly and vulnerable people thanks to the use of 4×4 vehicles.”
