Coleg Gwent students shine in national hair and beauty trainee competition

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Thursday February 10th, 2011.

Students from Coleg Gwent have battled it out to secure 12 places in the national final of a hair and beauty skills competition.

The students managed to collect three gold medals, four silvers and five bronze in the regional heat of the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists UK Trainee Competition 2011.

Crosskeys and City of Newport Campus hair and beauty students battled it out against competitors from Wales and the South West in the 13 different categories of the regional heats for a place in the national AHT final.

For the hair, categories included Ladies’ Evening Style, Men’s Commercial Cut and Finish and Ladies Long Hair. The beauty categories included Nail Art, Face and Body painting, as well as Catwalk and Masquerade Ball themed make-up.

Theatrical make-up students swept the board in the face and body painting event, coming away with a first, second, third and fourth place.

Competitors from the college’s Crosskeys and City of Newport Campuses had plenty to celebrate as they secured 12 national final places including gold in the team event with their stunning entry entitled A Night at The Theatre.

Rachel Matthews, Hair and Beauty Lecturer at Coleg Gwent, said: “We are thrilled with the results.

“All the students competing did a fantastic job against a high standard of entries and are now hoping to continue their success at the AHT national final in March.”

The winners from this regional round received medals and certificates along with a place in the National Finals in Blackpool to be held on March 13 and 14.
