Councillor’s call for 20mph speed limits near homes

Caerphilly Plaid Cymru councillor Stephen Kent is calling for 20mph zones to be introduced in residential areas across the county borough.

Cllr Kent, who represents the town’s St Martin’s ward, said: “Introducing 20mph zones in residential areas, such as housing estates, will make a strong statement on our desire to improve the safety of residents, particularly children.

“I believe that as councillors, we do not just represent the people in our own wards but the population of the county borough as a whole. We have a duty to ensure the safety of those more vulnerable.

“Increasing the use of 20mph limits is one of the commitments in the One Wales Agreement and trying to create a safe environment, especially with younger children with little or no knowledge of road safety and kerb craft, is vital.”

Cllr Kent has called for the new speed restrictions in light of a council report due to be presented next week.

A report, intended for the council’s Regeneration Scrutiny Committee next Tuesday, asks councillors to consider making changes to existing speed management policy to incorporate 20mph. But Cllr Kent wants the speed restriction introduced across the county borough’s residential areas.

So far the funding for 20mph zones has been prioritised outside schools or as part of accident remediation schemes.

this is nuthing but a useless stunt that looks good on paper. there is no need to reduce the speed limit below 30mph. it is 30 becose that is the speed were it is safe all this will do is

    1) slow down and calse grater congestion around entrences to resedental areas

    2) make things harder on our alrdey overworcked polce force

    3) increace traveling times

    4) cost money we dont have to have the new sien's made and installed

in sumery this will case problems and not improve safty. this is nuthing but a stunt that sounds good in the runup to the councel elections next year

aka a self seveing pile of preverbial
