Caerphilly Council to spend £1m on road repairs

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:00, Monday February 21st, 2011.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has agreed to £1million on road repairs following problems caused by the winter freeze.

Council leader Lindsay Whittle said: “The council’s highways network is our biggest asset, estimated to be valued at approximately £1 billion, and we are committed to ensuring that our highways remain at a high safety standard for our residents.”

The money will be allocated to improve key road networks in communities across the county borough.

In total, 41 separate schemes will be undertaken, with the majority being done before March 31 this year.

Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for transportation and planning said: “The recent bad weather has led to the deterioration of our highway network, so our inspectors have identified the worst hit areas. We will now use this funding to target these routes and deliver improvements using a comprehensive package of resurfacing works.”

A contribution of almost £380,000 has been provided by the Welsh Assembly Government to fund the works and an additional grant announcement is expected in the near future.
