Wales votes Yes in Assembly Referendum

Wales has overwhelmingly voted Yes in the referendum to give the Assembly more-making powers.

The final result was 517,132 Yes (63.49%) and 297,380 No (36.51%) .Turnout was 32.5%.

The result in Caerphilly County Borough mirrored the national result with 64.35% Yes and 35.65% No.

It now means Welsh Assembly can pass laws in 20 devolved areas such as health and education without the consent of the UK Government.

Labour First Minister Carwyn Jones said: “Today an old nation came of age.”

Deputy First Minister and Plaid Cymru leader Ieuan Wyn Jones said: “Over a decade ago, the Assembly was established. We can now welcome the beginning of a new era of Welsh devolution – the decade to deliver for Wales.

“The people of Wales have today told us that they share our ambitions for a better Wales. They want to see our nation succeed and they want our Assembly to take responsibility and to change Wales for the better. I can promise you, this is what we are now determined to do.

“This yes vote finally gives us the tools to do the job. Now it’s time to get on with the job of delivering for Wales.

“To demand respect, you must first display self respect. Today we have done just that, and the rest of the world can now sit up and take notice of the fact that our small nation, here on the western edge of the continent of Europe, has demonstrated pride in who we are, and what we all stand for.”

Commenting on Facebook, Caerphilly’s Labour AM Jeff Cuthbert said: “Well done to the people of Caerphilly and the Rhymney Valley for delivering a resounding Yes vote.”

His Westminster counterpart Wayne David said: “‘This was a good result for all of us who had campaigned for a ‘Yes’ vote. It is particularly gratifying that Labour supporters voted in favour of the Assembly having a better system to make laws.

“As the MP for Caerphilly, I am especially pleased that there was such a good result in the Caerphilly Borough. The positive ‘Yes’ vote provides a firm base for Labour to go forward to May’s Assembly Elections. I really hope that Labour will secure an overall majority in those elections.”

Devolution architect Ron Davies, the former Welsh Secretary, said that he was very pleased that almost 65 per cent of electors in Caerphilly County Borough voted Yes.

Former Welsh Secretary Ron Davies, who is now a Caerphilly councillor and a Plaid Assembly candidate, said: “This referendum victory is very good news for Plaid. It shows that people share Plaid’s ambitions for Wales. They want to see Wales succeed and want to see their government deliver for Wales.

“I will now be turning my focus on the Welsh General Election on May 5.The defining issues that we’ll highlight will be improving standards in our schools and creating new jobs to boost our economy.

“Now that Wales has voted Yes for a stronger Assembly, we need the party that’s best to deliver for Wales in that stronger Assembly. Only Plaid can do that.”

Andrew Diplock, Chairman of Caerphilly Business Forum and commercial director of UES, also welcomed the result.

He said: “The result is good news for both Caerphilly and Wales. It really shows that we have come a long way since the Assembly was first established. We now feel much more confident in our own ability, much more confident as a nation.

“It’s now up to all of us to make sure our elected representatives make the most of these new powers to improve our lot.

“One of the principles that must be ever-present in their decision making is the need to make Wales a more attractive place to do business in. For instance, cutting some of the red tape we all labour under could differentiate us from the rest and give us an important edge over other parts of the UK and Europe. It’s this type of approach, if sustained and built into our culture in Wales, that could bring business growth, jobs and prosperity.”
