At special school assembly at Maesycwmmer Primary School, Islwyn MP Chris Evans congratulated staff and pupils there after they earned the right to fly the prestigious ‘green flag’ in recognition of their efforts to become a more environmentally friendly school.

In order to gain the Eco Schools Green Flag status the school set up a pupil-led ‘eco committee,’ completed an environmental review and decided upon actions to improve sustainability at the school further.

Mr Evans said: “I would like to congratulate Maesycwmmer Primary School. Their hard work has made a real difference to the environment. I hope the important lessons they have learnt through the Eco Schools project will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

“I always look forward to visiting the school the atmosphere there is brilliant. I was hugely impressed with the enthusiasm of both pupils and staff to saving the environment.”
