Poundland to open in Blackwood in former Woolworths

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:54, Wednesday March 9th, 2011.

The former Woolworths store in Blackwood is to open as a Poundland.

The new store, on the town’s High Street, will create up to 30 jobs.

Councillor Ron Davies, cabinet member for regeneration said: “This is fantastic news for Blackwood and I’m sure the announcement will be welcomed by shoppers and the wider business community. We have worked hard over the last two years with the agents Cook and Arkwright to secure a tenant.

“The store enjoys a prominent position in the heart of the High Street and has been vacant since the closure of Woolworths. The opening of this popular discount store will plug a major gap in the town centre and will give shoppers another reason to visit Blackwood and enjoy the shopping experience.”

Last month the council announced the old Woolworths store in Bargoed is to be re-opened by The Original Factory Shop.

Poundland has already opened a store in Caerphilly town in the old Woolworths in Castle Court Shopping Centre.
