No footbridge tribute for late Risca councillor

A new footbridge planned for Risca will not bear the name of a late councillor.

A 155-name petition was handed to Caerphilly County Borough Council in support of naming the bridge at the new Tesco development, at the Old Foundry site, after Keith Griffiths.

Councillor Griffiths had served the town for 45 years before he passed away in 2008 aged 75 after a battling prostate cancer.

The Labour councillor had just been re-elected in Risca West when he died.

The decision not to name the bridge was made by the council’s cabinet on Tuesday after discussions with the late councillor’s family.

A council spokesman said: “We recognise the late Keith Griffiths was a dedicated councillor who tirelessly represented the Risca community during his lifetime. It should be noted the council some time ago determined it was not their policy to name structures or roads after existing or former councillors.”

The footbridge is part of a multimillion pound Tesco development which was granted planning permission in November last year.

The 80,000sq ft superstore and petrol station should bring an extra 500 jobs to the area.
