1,000 apply for 48 jobs at Caerphilly Wetherspoon pub The Malcolm Uphill

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 14:18, Friday September 23rd, 2011.

More than a thousand people have applied for a job at the new JD Wetherspoon pub in Caerphilly town.

The Malcolm Uphill, which is due to open next month, has 48 part-time and full-time positions available, but has been swamped with 1,112 applications – but the figure might even be higher.

The pub’s joint manager Dannie Stephens said: “They are the ones that have gone through pre-screening. The figure could have been two or three times as many.”

Work on the pub, which is occupying the old CoCo and Blockbuster buildings is gathering pace with the October 11 opening deadline getting closer.

Dannie, who will be managing the pub with her husband John, added: “The builders are doing a fabulous job and they are working so hard.”

A spokesman for JD Wetherspoon said: “We are thrilled that so many people wish to work for the company. It is a reflection of the fact that people want to work and it is as simple as that.

“There are a few companies creating large numbers of jobs and Wetherspoon is one of them.”

He added that unsuccessful job applicants will be kept on record for any future vacancies, either at the Malcolm Uphill or other Wetherspoon pubs.
