Police are continuing to appeal for information after a newborn baby boy was found at the back of the Spar Store, in Newport Road, Cwmcarn at 6.15pm on Thursday.
The baby was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Officers have decided to release photographs of the baby’s clothing and towels in an effort to appeal to his mother to contact them or for anyone who recognises the items to come forward.
The items include:
- A bath size towel bought from Dunelm. The towel is white with a gingerbread man and heart design on it
- A blue and white striped long sleeve top, with buttons at the neck, aged 3-6 months from Next (this is part of a three piece set)
- An orange beach towel manufactured by Arencibia, an outlet based on Gran Canaria
- A George orange vest top, size 14
Gwent Police received a call from the ambulance service and attended the scene at the Spar Store where they discovered the newborn baby wrapped in a towel.
A post-mortem was carried out on Friday which was inconclusive
Superintendent Jon Burley said: “We are continuing to appeal for the mother of the baby to come forward as we are extremely concerned about her health and well being and we need to make sure she gets the medical treatment she may require.
“We are also continuing to appeal for information from anyone who was in
the vicinity of the Spar Store on Thursday
“We are hopeful that by releasing the photographs of the baby clothes and items someone might recognise them. Perhaps if you have recently bought a present for an expectant mother and recognise the items please get in touch.
“The orange towel could have been brought back from a holiday and, if anyone knows a woman or girl who owns an orange vest top and wears a size 14, we would appeal for them to get in touch.
“Someone must know who the mother is as, until recently, this lady would have been heavily pregnant. We need these people to come forward.
“We have received a lot of support from the community so far and we would ask that this continues.
“This is a tragic incident and our priority remains to find the mother of the baby.”
Police would also like to hear from anyone with concerns about somebody they know, a friend or member of their family who they think could possibly be connected to the incident.
