Police hunt convicted Bargoed rapist

Update on Friday October 7: Gwent Police report they have captured Edwin Smith and he is currently in custody.

Police are appealing for information after a convicted rapist went on the run.

Edwin Smith, 43, and from the Bargoed area is wanted for failing to appear at Newport Crown Court on Tuesday October 4.

In his absence Smith was convicted of thirteen offences which include rape, serious sexual assault and physical assault relating to incidents which occurred between 1985 and 2006.

Smith is described as approximately 5ft 10in tall, of medium build and with bleach blonde shoulder length hair tied in a ponytail.

Police officers are currently undertaking numerous enquiries to locate him.

If anyone sees him, or is aware of his whereabouts, they are advised not to approach him but to contact Gwent Police immediately on 01633 838111 or to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
