Caerphilly Council to switch off lights for Earth Hour

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 08:00, Friday March 26th, 2010.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is to switch off its lights tomorrow in support of Earth Hour.

Organised by the World Wildlife Fund, its aim is to encourage local government, business, people and landmarks to switch off their lights for an hour at 8.30pm on Saturday.

The stunt is to raise awareness of climate change.

Lights at the council’s main Penallta House headquarters will be switched off along with three other adjacent council-run offices on the Tredomen Business Park.

Councillor Colin Mann, cabinet member for finance, resources and sustainability, said: “As a local authority we are continually looking at ways to reduce our carbon footprint and become more sustainable.

“Climate change is a serious threat and this event is a good way to highlight the issue and encourage more people stop and think about what we can all do to help.”

Last year around 3,000 cities and towns in 80 countries took part in Earth Hour.
