2,000 residents grab a free bag for life from Caerphilly Council

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:41, Monday October 10th, 2011.

More residents across Caerphilly County Borough are committed to using bags for life, after signing up to a pledge at a series of council-run events last week.

Throughout last week, more than 1,000 people signed a pledge to reduce the amount of single use carrier bags they use, and in return officers from Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Tidy Towns team gave out more than 2,000 free reusable bags for life.

Events have been held in Blackwood, Caerphilly and Risca following the introduction of new charges of single use carrier bags coming into force across Wales on October 1.

Cllr Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for public services said, “Wales is the first country in Wales to introduce a levy for single use carrier bags and Caerphilly is leading by example in helping its residents become greener. We are championing the message of living better and using less, and having pride in your place.

“We have received extremely positive feedback from residents at these events, and they have shown a genuine interest and enthusiasm by signing the pledge and helping to improve our environment”.
