Caerphilly Council to charge for wheelie bins & bulk waste

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Wednesday April 7th, 2010.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is to introduce charges for new wheelie bins and bulk waste collections.

A service charge of £15 for the collection of between one and three bulky household items, such as sofas, and £20 for the collection of four to six items will now apply.

A service charge of £25 for all new and replacement green wheelie bins, which were offered free, was also agreed by the council’s cabinet at a recent meeting.

Councillor Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for the environment said: “It is important for householders to understand they are still able to take items free of charge to any of the council’s six Civic Amenity sites located throughout the county borough, or make use of a variety of other free avenues available for collection of bulky household items such as the Rhymney-based Community Furniture Enterprise.

“Goods for re-use by the Community Furniture Enterprise are collected free of charge, cleaned and tested before being sold at very competitive prices to those in need in the local area.

“The website www.uk.freecycle.org is another excellent means of recycling unwanted bulky household items free of charge. Its aim is to encourage community involvement and keep usable items from going to landfill.”

Deputy council leader Colin Mann added: “The implementation of these measures represents a crucial part of our medium term budget strategy, agreed at a meeting of full council earlier this year.

“By introducing a small service charge for these public services in a similar vein to many other local authorities in Wales, this allows us to make substantial financial savings while maintaining an excellent level of service to our residents.”

The initial issue to residents of brown wheeled bins, green boxes, green waste bags and food caddies will continue to be provided free of charge to encourage recycling, although replacement brown wheeled bins will now cost £25.
