Bikers told to take care this summer

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 12:33, Wednesday March 23rd, 2011.

Bikers have been urged to take care on the roads this spring and summer.

Gwent Police issued the warning ahead of the clocks going forward this weekend and the increase in the hours of daylight for motorcyclists to explore the region’s scenic routes.

Inspector Lee Ford, from the Road Policing Unit, said: “Gwent has some excellent motorcycle routes and together with lower traffic levels than many parts of the UK, these attract many riders to the area, particularly at weekends and when the weather is good.

“We don’t want to stop these motorcycles using these roads and enjoying their vehicles, however, we ask them to ride safely, responsibly and with regard for others.”

Safety skills courses, with a mix of theory and practical sessions, are being run by BikeSafe Cymru in the coming weeks.

Bikers who are interested in taking part can book or check information at www.bikesafe.co.uk or on 08444 151206 or by emailing info@bikesafeadmin.co.uk.

I would like to add, as a motorcyclist of 30 odd years, ride defensively. Treat every car you encounter as if the driver is on a mobile, texting, arguing with a passenger or trying to care for children whilst driving.

In my experience they often are and are oblivious to your presence. Better to get home safe and live to enjoy another day's riding than end up on a mortuary slab.

    Ride safe, be happy!
