A 19-year-old paedophile has been jailed indefinitely after he admitted raping an 11-year-old girl.

Joseph Rees, of Llantwit Fardre, Pontypridd, attacked the girl in Llanbradach Park, near the library, on Monday January 4 this year.

The girl, who was off school through an inset day, was grabbed into some woods as she walked home.

Judge Nicholas Cooke, the Recorder of Cardiff, told Rees that he would have to serve at least six and half years in jail but that his indefinite sentence meant that he may never be free.

He also granted a sexual offences prevention order, banning Rees from having contact with under-18s unless in a public place or when accompanied by another adult, and banning him from entering public parks alone.

At a previous hearing Rees pleaded guilty to rape of a girl under 13 and was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register.

Cardiff Crown Court was told it was an opportunist daylight attack and that Rees did not know the girl.

The attack was only interrupted after a woman walking her dog intervened.

Rees’s foster mother, who he had been visiting over Christmas, called the police after suspicions were raised when Rees was wearing clothes that matched a description of the attacker.
