Election battle heats up as Caerphilly’s Labour and Plaid candidates clash

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Wednesday April 21st, 2010.

Wayne David, Caerphilly’s Labour candidate for the general election, has crossed swords with Plaid Cymru rival Lindsay Whittle over council spending cuts.

Mr David launched a scathing attack on Plaid Cymru candidate Lindsay Whittle, who is also leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, and said: “Over the past two weeks, I have received hundreds of complaints from constituents who are worried about the council’s cuts.

“I can understand people’s concerns and I share their very real worries.

“The council’s cuts are callous and are causing real worries amongst ordinary people in Caerphilly.

“Recently, the council announced that residents would have to pay a service charge for the collection of bulky household items and replacement wheelie bins.

“These are on top of the council switching off street lights at night, thereby undermining the safety of our communities.

“Understandably, people are very concerned about these cuts and they need to remember that it is Plaid Cymru who are responsible for them and the Plaid Cymru leader of the council is standing for Parliament in the general election.”

Councillor Whittle though furiously hit back at Mr David’s attack and said: “This just smacks of desperation from an increasingly desperate party.

“I will take no lectures from Labour, particularly as 45,000 public sector jobs in Wales are under threat from their plans for spending cuts.

“Perhaps Wayne David could explain to the people of Caerphilly why Wales has been short-changed to the tune of £300m a year in funding by successive Labour and Conservative governments. A slice of those millions should be coming to Caerphilly.

“Gordon Brown helped create this economic crisis and many people in Caerphilly County Borough have paid the price through loss of their jobs, including those in manufacturing.

“The council has been forced to take some difficult decisions because of the failings at Westminster and the Labour MP for Caerphilly has been a part of a Government that has presided over this economic disaster.

“Wayne David can’t duck his responsibilities – even though he’s clearly trying to. People can see through it.”

quite right. staggering Labour hypocrisy. Nevermind, they won't be around much longer, either in Westminster or Ystrad.

If all politicians spent their time, effort and funds on manufacturing something the UK could export at a profit not only would our Country be better off but our politicians would prove that they know how to make money instead of spending (usually wasting) it.

Please stop bickering at each other like rabid dogs and do try and buck up.
