Caerphilly Council has been planting flags where dog mess has been found

Council workers have been planting flags into the ground where dogs mess has been to highlight the problem.

The slightly bizarre approach to warning dog owners to pick up after their pooches is part of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s StreetPride scheme.

The council has warned that it will fine owners found not disposing of their dog’s misdemeanours.

Between April 2007 and March 2009 the council handed out 189 fines of £75 each to dog owners.

Councillor Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for the environment said: “The majority of dog owners do take their environmental responsibilities seriously and clear up after their dog, however there is still a small minority who do not cooperate.

“It is this small minority of people that we aim to engage with so they realise that they will either pick up their dog’s mess, or pay the price for failing to do so.”
