A council by-election for the Blackwood ward will be held on July 8.

The by-election is being held after long-serving independent councillor Kevin Etheridge stood down last month citing personal reasons.

The full list of candidates who will be standing for the Caerphilly County Borough Council seat will be published on June 15.

According to the South Wales Argus, former Blackwood town mayor Andrew Farina-Childs and former Blackwood town and county borough councillor Nigel Dix could be standing for Plaid Cymru and Labour respectively.

Mr Etheridge’s father recently died aged 89 and he also makes frequent trips to Great Ormond Street Hospital where his grandson is being treated for a genetic condition.

The now ex-councillor is the subject of an investigation by the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales into childcare allowance claims he received while sitting on Caerphilly County Borough Council.
