Woman admits hiding baby in Pengam home

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 08:04, Friday May 28th, 2010.

A 30-year-old woman has admitted hiding her dead newborn baby in the attic of her Pengam home.

Caerphilly Magistrates’ Court was told that Maxine Davies, of Cwmcarn Road, Pontywaun, hid her pregnancy from family and friends and panicked when the newborn baby was not moving or breathing.

She gave birth in secret at a council house in Farm Road, Pengam, after getting pregnant by her partner. The court was told she hid the pregnancy because she knew her partner didn’t want a baby.

After giving birth on her bed, Davies put the baby in a box of teddy bears in her wardrobe for three days before wrapping the box in a plastic bag and putting it in the attic.

The court was told the incident haunts Davies and that she never went into the attic once she hid the baby.

Caerphilly County Borough Council began to clear the address for a new tenant in September after Davies left the house in August 2009.

The boy’s death was estimated to be between June and December 2008.

On September 15 a council worker was clearing the attic when the baby was found.

Davies came forward and handed herself in at Blackwood police station after a friend text her to tell her about the police outside her former home.

She told officers that she had panicked and felt like a monster for leaving the baby.

Magistrates gave Davies an absolute discharge.

A funeral for the baby has been arranged for next week.
