Caerphilly students kicking off for Wales

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:00, Friday April 1st, 2011.

Five students from Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys campus in Caerphilly have been picked for the British College’s Welsh women’s football squad

The team is made up of players chosen from further education colleges across Wales.

Crosskeys campus students Abigail Powell, Katrina French, Katie Burridge, Rachel Griffiths and Ceri Hudson, as well as Usk Campus student Chelsey Flenley, were selected for the squad after successful trials earlier this year.

A seventh Crosskeys student, Jade Williams, also stepped in to play for the team when Rachel Griffiths sustained an injury.

Students recently played against Aberystwyth University Ladies and English Colleges Football Association and also took part in Anglo Welsh Shield matches against British Colleges Sport England.

Sports lecturer Mererid Dark said: “The team is performing really well and the quality of football is tremendous.

“All girls have found the standard of football extremely high and believe that there need to be more opportunities for girls’ club football in Wales.”

The five Crosskeys campus players will also be heading to Bath University on Friday 8 April to represent Wales in the British College’s Women’s 5-a-side Championships, part of the National Championships.
