Council funding helps Crosskeys business off the ground

A new construction firm in the Caerphilly County Borough has received help from the Community Business Support Fund to get it off the ground.

Crosskeys based Bulldog Construction has been set up by local man Thomas Payne, who received financial support after working with Caerphilly county borough council and UK Steel Enterprise.

Thomas was recently made redundant after working for ten years with a small family firm and decided to set up his own businesses. He has worked with the Prince’s Trust to plan his new venture and undertaken training with the HM Revenue and Customs to ensure that he has a full understanding of the financial side of his business.

He was keen to access funds to help purchase vital tools and equipment needed for the job and was delighted to qualify for a Community Business Support Fund. He can now develop his firm offering kitchen and bathroom fitting, carpentry, general building and maintenance services.

Councillor Ron Davies, the council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We urge our local entrepreneurs to get in touch to find out more about the range of support that is available – from funding through to help with ICT and finding the right business property.”

Corus subsidiary UK Steel Enterprise provided funding for the scheme. Area manager Andy Morris said: “With bank lending hard to come by, this type of fund is vital to get small businesses off the ground and we wish Thomas well in his venture.”

The Community Business Support Fund provides financial support to help eligible new businesses develop and grow. This is a flexible grant scheme delivered through a partnership between Caerphilly county borough council and UK Steel Enterprise.

The fund is designed to help residents of Caerphilly county borough to set up a full-time business for the first time, where they are not able to access funding from any other source.
