Cheese race planned for Caerphilly’s Big Cheese Festival

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 10:58, Friday June 25th, 2010.

A fancy-dress “Great Cheese Race” will be staged as a highlight of the annual Big Cheese Festival in Caerphilly.

Teams will compete in a relay race which involves transporting a Caerphilly cheese around a course leading to the rear of Caerphilly Castle on a traditional wooden cheese stretcher.

The races start on Friday, July 23, at 6.30pm, on the first day of the three day festival, and will be followed by a fireworks display at 10pm.

Entry is open for teams of four who want to compete in the race. Prizes will be awarded to the winners and the team with the best costumes.

For more information and to enter call 01443 866390 or email events@caerphilly.gov.uk. Closing date for entries is Friday, July 16.

The Big Cheese Weekend will also feature music, dance, falconry, fire-eating, craft stalls, food halls, comedy and history displays among other attractions.
