School children from across Caerphilly County Borough have been rewarded for their efforts in a road safety competition.
Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Road Safety team challenged children from some of the county borough’s primary schools to design a poster that could be incorporated into a new school sign.
The design had to be representative of encouraging traffic to slow down outside the school, and remind motorists that “twenty is plenty”.
Pupils from Ynysddu, Deri and Bedwas Primary Schools were involved in the competition, and the winners and runners up were invited to a presentation at Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters, Penallta House recently, where they received their prizes from the Mayor, Cllr James Fussell.
At the presentation, Cllr Rob Gough, cabinet member for public protection, engineering and transport spoke to the children about the importance of reducing speed outside schools and encouraging more children to walk to school.
Cllr Gough said: “This fantastic competition really gave our local youngsters an opportunity to get involved in promoting the importance of road safety. It was pleasing to see so many excellent designs, many of which incorporated traditionally ‘slow’ animals such as snails and caterpillars to help encourage motorists to slow down outside the schools.”
The winners received a mock-up of their design on a sign as their prize, as well as vouchers.
Caerphilly County Borough Council has made the speed limit outside and around the schools taking part 20mph – the winning designs will be used on the road sign outside the schools to remind drivers to slow down.
