A group of four Caerphilly mothers have set-up a new breastfeeding group in the town to offer support to new mums.

Called Full Circle, the group was officially launched by the Mayor of Caerphilly Town Council Jenny Hibbert, last Wednesday.

Several local mums came to the launch along with representatives from the Family Information Service and Health Challenge Caerphilly.

The group is run on a voluntary basis by four local mothers who had all experienced problems breastfeeding their own babies and were disappointed with the lack of support and understanding about breastfeeding.

It is hoped the group will become a registered charity.

Breastfeeding rates in Caerphilly are the second lowest in Wales, with just 8.5% of babies breastfed at six months.

The Government recommends that all babies are exclusively breastfed for the first six months.

Jessica Starr, one of the mothers who set up the group said: “We know that many mothers want to breastfeed but are unable to because they don’t have access to good support and information. We want to change this.

Our aim with Full Circle is to re-normalise breastfeeding in Caerphilly and the surrounding areas through providing information and support.”

Caerphilly Town Mayor Jenny Hibbert said: “It’s great that this group is here for the mothers of Caerphilly. I remember what it was like as a new mum, you can feel very isolated. Having a group like this, where you can meet other pregnant and breastfeeding mums, is such an important resource for the community.

“There is such a lovely atmosphere here. I’m sure mums will enjoy coming to the group.”

Full Circle Breastfeeding Support Group is held at the Twyn Community Centre every Wednesday from 10.15am to 12noon. It is free to attend and refreshments are provided.
