Pupils from Abercarn Primary School recently celebrated their school’s ‘Eco’ status with a green party.

The school has been awarded a prestigious Green Flag for the school’s environmentally-friendly activities.

Abercarn Primary School’s Eco Committee has been working hard on an action plan, which they drew up for the school year. They have been working with pupils, staff and the community to improve the environment, reduce waste and conserve energy.

Activities included walk to school week, recycling plastic, paper and tin, a fashion show of recycled clothes, a saving water project and energy maintenance projects throughout the curriculum and school.

The school also continues to work had to develop its grounds and use the outdoors as part of the curriculum as much as possible.

Mr Gareth Roden, Headteacher said: “I am very proud of both pupils and staff for their continued commitment in making Abercarn Primary School an environmentally friendly school”.

Cllr Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for public services said: “I would like to congratulate Abercarn Primary School for working so hard to make a real difference to their environment. The Eco Schools scheme is an excellent way for pupils to learn about sustainability from an early age, and I hope these important lessons will stay with them for the rest of their lives.”

The school is also extremely grateful for the donation of a flag pole from Barratt Homes.
