Bargoed Police Station to open doors to public and schoolchildren

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 12:00, Monday December 5th, 2011.

Members of the public and schoolchildren will be able to go behind the scenes at Bargoed Police Station’s 100-year-old building.

On Friday December 9, 80 pupils from St Gwladys Primary School, Park Primary School and Glyngaer Primary School have been invited along to take a look at what modern day policing entails, and to celebrate the history of the building, which has been a police station for more than a century.

It is believed the station has been haunted for many years by a friendly ghost called Cedric. Officers on night shifts have reported hearing footsteps on the corridor upstairs.

The children will have the opportunity to visit the cells, meet local Inspector, Huw Jones, and have a souvenir fingerprint badge or key ring to take away.

Inspector Jones said: “Opening our station doors is a great way to let the children and public have an insight in to what goes on within Bargoed Police Station – a lot has changed over the last 100 years.

“We’re hoping everyone will take away with them some knowledge and understanding of what goes on in modern policing and the changes that have taken place over the years to get to where we are today.”

The station will also be open to the general public on Saturday December 10 for tours at 10am, 11am and 12 noon.

If you would like to attend one of the tours, book your place by emailing Corporate.Communications@gwent.pnn.police.uk with your full name and suitable time slot.

Entrance is free and light refreshments will be provided.

I grew up in the bargoed area and was quite surprised to find out recently that the police station is actually haunted, i can well believe it!, my family and i had simuler experiences living in a property caled 'Gladstone villa' now known as 'redz parc hotel' We also heard noises that simply defied rational explanation like footsteps in the main bedroom when we would all be downstairs watching tv, and one of us would turn the tv down to hear it more clearly. I had my 40th birthday there for old times sake and the staff told me its still there and there has been a sighting in room 5, which was my grandparents old room in the 1970's and where the ghost mostly occupied itself, so for those who dont believe me can stay the night there, i'm sure their belief system would be challenged!
