Gwent Police is to be investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission over the way it handled a complaint that a firearms officer had sex with a married woman while on duty.
According to national press reports, PC Shaun Jenkins was originally allowed to keep his job after facing allegations of gross misconduct once details of the affair emerged. The woman’s husband then complained to the IPCC which in turn told Gwent Police to reinvestigate and PC Jenkins was later fired.
According to the Telegraph, Jenkins, 35, allegedly drove his patrol car to the Caerphilly home of the married woman for sex in the afternoon while he was on duty.
He allegedly wore his uniform and left his loaded gun on the dressing table during the secret lovemaking.
His partner was left sitting in the car outside while he spent 40 minutes in the bedroom.
The IPCC will now investigate how Gwent Police handled the original complaint by the woman’s husband after a voluntary referral from Gwent Police.
IPCC Commissioner for Wales Tom Davies said: “I am concerned at how Gwent Police dealt with a serious complaint, as this could potentially undermine public confidence in the complaints system. I have therefore decided this matter should be investigated by IPCC investigators.
“The case itself has recently been reported extensively in the media and relates to a firearms officer.
“We will publish our findings in due course, which I hope will help allay any public concerns about the way police complaints are dealt with.”
PC Jenkins has previously been commended in his work for stopping a suicidal man jumping off a road bridge.
