Exam Results

I must congratulate pupils at our schools who achieved excellent results in this year’s A-Level and GCSE results. They clearly worked very hard and are a real credit to Caerphilly.

Indeed the percentage of A grades at A-Level jumped to almost 20 per cent – their highest ever level.

And the percentage of pupils who achieved 5 GCSE passes at A*- C (or vocational equivalent) has increased significantly to 61%, up from 54% in 2009.

Praise for the results should also go to our teaching staff for helping the pupils to succeed and also to parents.
The results, as our education director has said, reflect our efforts to provide the most appropriate learning opportunities for all of our young people.

Assembley Elections

I wanted to let readers know that I will be seeking a place on the Plaid Cymru regional list for South-East Wales at next year’s National Assembly elections.

My aim, if selected and then elected, is to create a better Wales through the National Assembly.

You will know of my commitment to public service after 34 years as councillor and I’ve never shied away from difficult decisions, fighting injustice in all its forms. I hope my record will stand me in good stead.

Child Safety

An important initiative was carried out by the council’s trading standards department aimed at improving child safety.

Local motorists got the chance to have their child car seats safety tested and over two days a total of 185 child car seats were examined, with 52% failing the tests with at least one fault.

This was aimed at raising public awareness of the dangers of unsuitable or badly fitted car seats and 11% of faults were classed as major.

I hope all parents will check the correct restraint for their weight range is fitted and if you need advice trading standards are there to help on 01495 235 291.
