A special multi-media challenge was launched by the four Welsh Police Forces and Road Safety Wales to encourage schools and colleges across the country to come up with a powerful message about the consequences of drink driving.

Lewis School Pengam was announced as one of the four winners in the Gwent Police area at a special awards ceremony during the launch of the Wales Christmas Campaign Against Drinking and Driving, held recently at the Congress Theatre, Cwmbran.

The central feature of the film is a haunting song written and produced by 17-year-old Richard Morgan.

The lyrics gently speak about the devastating effect on family and friends after someone has lost their life in a drink drive crash.

“We are delighted that one of our schools has scooped this top prize and I’d like to congratulate all those involved for this fantastic achievement,” said Cllr Rob Gough, CCBC cabinet member for public protection. “As the festive season approaches we are keen to work with the police to highlight the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and schemes like this help spread the word by engaging young people.”

The competition was open to all students aged between 11 and 25. The challenge was to produce a DVD of not more than 3 minutes in length with an anti drink drive message. Participants were encouraged to use a variety of media for the DVD e.g. film, music, poetry, dance etc.
