MPs have been in the headlines recently for pocketing payments left right and centre, but Islwyn MP Chris Evans was so moved by the story of one Blackwood fundraiser that he decided to hand a cheque to her.

Mr Evans was paid £150 to take part in a poll by research company Ipsos Mori but decided to give the cheque to cancer survivor Bridget McNally.

Bridget was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 which then spread to her bones and liver but she fought on during her treatment and raised thousands of pounds.

Bridget has helped raise over £200,000 for Cancer Research UK by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and is also the chair of the Valleys Relay for Life. In addition to this, she is a Cancer Campaigns ambassador and was awarded an MBE in 2009.

Knowing of the inspirational work that Bridget has done locally for cancer charities, Mr Evans gave his £150 to Cancer Research UK.

He said said: “I was delighted to donate the money to Cancer Research UK and was particularly pleased that Bridget accepted the cheque on behalf of the charity.

“I have known Bridget for a number of years. While battling the disease and undergoing chemotherapy she dedicated her time to raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity. Bridget’s courage and positivity is an inspiration to us all.”
