Next phase of Ystrad Mynach road improvements to start

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 10:00, Friday January 6th, 2012.

The next phase of roadworks in Ystrad Mynach is due to start on January 14.

From that date, motorists travelling westbound on the A472 from Maesycwmmer towards Ystrad Mynach will not be able to access the Cwm Du roundabout. Instead, traffic will be diverted along the new slip road that has been constructed to link with the A469 dual carriageway.

Northbound traffic on the A469 will use the Cwm Du roundabout as normal, although vehicles will be diverted on to the opposing carriageway lane over part of the period.

The work is necessary to allow the contractor to progress the tie-in between the new carriageway and the existing highway as well as widen the existing A472 West of the tie-in. It is estimated that the diversion will be in place for a period of 10 to 12 weeks.

Cllr Rob Gough, council cabinet member for transportation said: “This major improvement scheme in Ystrad Mynach will have a positive impact on traffic flow at this key strategic location. The works have been designed to compliment the opening of the new Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr hospital and will greatly improve the road network at this major intersection between the A469 and the A472.”

Work will take place between 9.30am and 3.30pm and motorists should allow extra time for the journey because of delays.
