Buses between Blackwood and Newport every 15 minutes from Monday

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 16:00, Friday January 6th, 2012.

Travelling between Blackwood and Newport is set to get easier from Monday January 9 with buses departing every 15 minutes.

Route 56, which operates between Tredegar, Markham, Blackwood, Ynysddu, Cwmfelinfach, Crosskeys, Risca and Newport currently operates every half hour between Blackwood and Newport.

From Monday, bus company Stagecoach will up its frequency to 15 minutes.

There are no changes to the hourly frequency of those buses travelling to and from Tredegar. The service also runs up to every two hours during the daytime on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

John Gould, managing director of Stagecoach in South Wales, said: “We hope that the introduction of a 15 minute frequency between Blackwood and Newport will give the travelling public a viable alternative to the private car.

“We believe that this enhancement will deliver a much-needed boost for bus provision in South Wales, and also play a vital role in sustaining the environment. Our message to residents along this route is simple – leave your car at home and ‘Just Go’ by Stagecoach instead.

“Only last June we invested £750,000 in Service 26 as part of an ongoing Stagecoach campaign in South Wales to encourage more people to leave their cars at home and travel instead by bus. Since the launch passenger numbers have risen on average BY 45%.”

Cllr Rob Gough, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet member for transportation said, “We welcome the introduction of this enhanced service that will hopefully encourage even more local people to use our excellent public transport facilities. The council is keen to promote local bus and train services and we are delighted that Stagecoach are working with us to increase frequency for the benefit of our travelling public.”

Lets be quite frank here, the way things are going in Newport why would you want to go there? i heard M&S is closing, next has gone and a few other big brands/stores.

Im a driver, my car was in the garage yesterday, I had to go somewhere in Cardiff to drop something off and it took me from 10am and I got in at 3pm. In my car it would have took me 1.5 hrs max in rush hour. Plus it cost me £8.40 yes i repeat £8.40, in my car (and im pretty savvy with this) it would have cost me say at 15p per mile, it was say a 30 mile trip it would have cost me £4.50 in fuel.

Last summer my car was in the garage again, I travelled from Newport to Blackwood via this route, then I travelled from Blackwood back home to Ystrad Mynach. Looking at the time table you would have thought Blackwood was detached from Caerphilly CBC as the only buses going (if i recall rightly) were ones to Pontypridd and ones to Cardiff, they were either half hourly or hourly. Either way, I thought that was pretty pathetic for a connection bus from Blackwood to the southern part of Caerphily CBC.

So my point is Public Transport is only good for one thing, going to the pub, because you cant drink and drive. But thats flawed as well, as a taxi from caerphilly to bedwas cost £4.80 the other day, there were four of us and if we caught the bus it would have cost £6 at least (and we had to wait 3/4 hour for it) at £6 a return to cardiff on the train not only are these prices excluding people on low incomes, its isolating them, plus the irony is if thers a few of you i would say a taxi is cheaper and not as environmentally friendly. Public transport is pants.
