Christmas footfall in town centres unchanged from 2010

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 10:25, Tuesday January 10th, 2012.

The number of shoppers heading into town centres in Caerphilly County Borough for Christmas 2011 was unchanged from the previous year – defying fears of a slump.

Figures released by Caerphilly County Borough Council show:

Week Commencing Caerphilly Blackwood Bargoed South
12/12/2011 40508 46971 6,715
19/12/2011 48433 54896 6589

The council said it had feared a drop in footfall because of the current economic downturn.

Cllr Ron Davies, cabinet member for regeneration said: “These figures are encouraging and show that local people are still doing their bit to support the local economy. It is important that this continues, especially in the current economic climate.

“For retailers, their expectations entering the Christmas trading period were quite low, but it’s encouraging to see that local people have rallied and the trading period was not as bad as was first feared.”
