Bedwas pub ordered to close by Caerphilly Magistrates

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 16:02, Thursday January 12th, 2012.

The White Hart Pub, on Church Street in Bedwas, has been ordered to close for ten days by Caerphilly Magistrates’ Court because of disorder at the premises.

Gwent Police were called to the pub on Saturday January 7 following an incident and made a closure order under the Licensing Act – meaning the pub had to shut immediately.

On Monday January 9, Inspector Paul Staniforth, from the Bedwas Neighbourhood Policing Team, and local residents attended Caerphilly Magistrates’ Court to give evidence.

The court granted that the premises must remain closed until Caerphilly County Borough Council holds a Licencing Review Hearing on Monday January 23.

The Licensing Committee will then make a ruling about the future of the premises, which could decide one of the following:

  • Revoke the licence completely
  • Revoke the licence for a three month period
  • Provide the pub with stringent licensing conditions

Inspector Staniforth said: “I am very pleased with the courts decision today to extend the closure notice, as it reflects the concern felt by local residents within the Bedwas area.

“This is a prime example of the police working with local residents in order to maintain a peaceful community. I hope this firm action sends out a clear message to all licensed premises about their responsibilities and reinforces the fact that we will not tolerate situations that adversely effects the quality of life for our local residents.”
