Coleg Gwent students scoop co-op prize

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Monday January 16th, 2012.

Independent Living Skills (ILS) students at Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys campus have won a four week supply of fresh fruit as part of a food co-op competition.

The students, who run their own food co-op, came first out of 320 similar co-ops in South Wales.

The competition was open to all customers and volunteers of food co-ops across Wales and aimed to gain endorsements used to promote the benefits of food co-ops to potential customers and volunteers.

Hannah James, of charity the Rural Regeneration Unit, said: “It was a tough decision as we had lots of great entries but Coleg Gwent’s demonstrated the benefits of the food co-op perfectly and was quite catchy giving it that marketing edge.”

College lecturer Victoria English said she was over the moon with the achievement and added: “The group enjoyed composing the slogan thinking about all the benefits of the co-op – how reasonable the cost is, how it encourages healthy eating and the fun of checking each week the different seasonal produce we get delivered.

“It is a fantastic scheme which is now in its second year, which is incredibly popular across the Campus, for both staff and students alike.”

Coleg Gwent also runs a food co-op at Pontypool Campus.
