Gwent Police named in top 100 employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual staff

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 16:00, Friday January 13th, 2012.

Gwent Police has been rated as one of the top 100 employers in the UK for promoting equality among its staff.

The force has been placed at 82 in the Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index – which showcases Britain’s top employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual staff. Gwent Police has also been named as “Most Improved Welsh Employer” by Stonewall Cymru.

Three hundred and sixty three organisations entered this year’s Workplace Equality Index with the top 100 based on the results of a survey.

Simon Prince, the Assistant Chief Constable of Gwent Police, said: “This is the fourth time Gwent Police has been inside the top 100 since joining the Workplace Equality Index in February 2006.

“It shows we are consistently making efforts to improve our working environment and the service we provide to the public. The introduction of LGBT Liaison officers and some of the awareness raising activities our LGBT Support Network have initiated shows Gwent Police’s strength in this area and we are delighted to have been recognised for our efforts.”

Andrew White, Director of Stonewall Cymru, said: “During the past year Gwent Police have shown commitment and innovation in how they continue to make life better for their lesbian, gay and bisexual employees. We are thrilled that they have re-entered the Top 100 and can justly claim to be among the top police forces in the UK on LGB equality.”
